Planning a family photo session can be a stressful endeavor. Finding time in your busy schedule, coordinating the kiddos, and finding a reputable area photographer can all be daunting. But – fret not! Kali Klicks is here to help. Katelyn, our owner, has an impressive portfolio of family portraits and is very skilled with kids of all ages.
Here are our top 5 tips to help your family photo session go off without a hitch!
Do your homework! Myrtle Beach offers several fantastic indoor and outdoor venues for family photo shoots. Are you a CCU alumni? Consider heading over to the campus for a meaningful session. Looking for something more nostalgic? Head over the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk and hit up an ice cream shop and an arcade. And, of course, one couldn’t forget about the beach! These are just a few of the many, many area spots that are ideal for family portraits. It is, however, important to keep in mind seasonality, particularly in Myrtle Beach. Many of these local hotspots can be very busy in the summer. And, speaking of summer, Myrtle Beach gets pretty hot, which can make outdoor sessional uncomfortable. Consult with Katelyn at Kali Klicks for venue recommendations or with any questions you might have about the best time of day for a particular location, etc.
Having your clothing picked out in advance can save a lot of time and planning as the big day approaches. There’s nothing worse than getting to the day of your photo shoot and realizing your outfit is in the laundry! In addition to advanced planning, think about what you want your pictures to look like. Many beach-goers enjoy the classic “white linen” look, which provides a soft, elegant approach. Think about the photo session destination, the time of year, and what the family will be comfortable in for an extended period of time. Bows and collars might be cute but can also be irritating and distracting for the kiddos!
While we strive to be efficient with our photo shoots, it is inevitable that capturing various shots will take some time, and empty stomachs or fussy toddlers will only prolong the experience. If at all possible, try and make sure everyone in the shoot is well rested and well fed for the day! You can even bring some snacks and refreshments along for the adventure to keep the crew happy.
Does your family enjoy reading together? How about sports? Incorporating different hobbies into your portraits will not only make them more personal but also more natural. Plus, it will make the photo shoot more fun! A few quick, cute ideas include: bikes, sports equipment like a football, baseball and bat, or soccer ball, ice cream bars, card or board games, coloring books… the options are limitless! And, don’t forget to include your favorite furry friends. Again, the key to pulling off fun and creative photos is to keep the venue in mind; a pick up game of football or piggybacking on the beach would be cute while that same concept might not translate well in a more serious backdrop. Consult your photographer, Katelyn, for ideas or questions about what to incorporate!
We will of course incorporate whatever shots you are looking for into the shoot, but do remember that over-posed pictures can come off as stiff and awkward. Rather than worrying about everyone looking perfect, focus on keeping the crew relaxed and focused. Our photographer will take charge in giving feedback on ay adjustments that should be made during the shoot. And, many of the best shots are completely unplanned! Also keep in mind that not everyone needs to be looking at the camera to capture a great shot. Keep things light and trust that you are in great hands with Kali Klicks!
